Synopsis vol 5 page 420

Revelation 21:1-5 gives us the v.9 – ch. 22:4 is the millennial city.

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away’.

There was a new heaven and a new earth; but no more sea — no separation, nor part of the world not brought into an ordered earth before God. Here we do not find any mediatorial kingdom. The Lamb is not in the scene. God is all in all. No sorrow or crying more, no earthly people of God distinct from the inhabitants of the earth. These are God’s people, and God is with them Himself, but withal His tabernacle is with them. This is the holy city, New Jerusalem.

The assembly has her own character, is the habitation of God in a special way, when the unchanging state comes, and all is made new. God is the end, as the beginning. Him that is athirst now God will refresh with the fountain of the water of life — the overcomer shall inherit all things. The world for the Christian is now a great Rephidim[1].

This is the twofold portion of the final blessedness: he shall have God for his God and be His son. Those who feared this path — did not overcome the world and Satan but had walked in iniquity — would have their part in the lake of fire.  This closes the history of God’s ways.

[1] Rephadim was the place of the battle against between the children of Israel and Amalek, shortly after going over the Red Sea.  ‘The LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation’ (Exodus 17:16).

Section 5 – Other Papers on Prophecy by J N Darby

‘After These Things’ Section 5 – Other Papers on Prophecy by J N Darby

From our book ‘After These Things – Summaries of John Nelson Darby’s Papers on Prophecy – and more…’ Compiled by Daniel Roberts. For more about this book click on the picture or CLICK HERE

J N Darby wrote many other papers and gave various  lectures on prophetic subjects.  Much of this work is covered in the four ‘Prophetic’ volumes of Collected Writings.  Those which have been summarised in this book are highlighted.

You will see that I have selected only a very few.  However, it is my opinion that most of the essential truths relating to the period from the Rapture onwards have been covered.  If I summarised much more this book would be excessively long and there would be much repetition and duplication.

A list of published books by J N Darby, along with the table of contents of the four ‘Prophetic’ volumes is presented in the Bibliography Chapter 6.

This section, therefore, covers the following:

5.1 The Power, Hopes, Calling, Present Position, and Occupation of the Church

–           Source Material Vol. 12 (Evangelical 1)

5.2 After the Rapture, the Jewish Remnant – Particularly from Isaiah

–           Source Material Vol. 11 (Prophetic 4)

J N Darby – God is Caring for us in Everything

Golden Nugget Number 356

J N DarbyGod then is for us in giving, for us in justifying, for us in caring for us in everything; even as with the children of Israel, He took care of their very clothes as they passed through the wilderness.  God is for us through everything.  If death stares me in the face, well, Christ went through it.  If evil powers are against me, well, I have a love with me that has been tried, and destroyed that power.  I learn in these very things the perfectness of the love of God.  It comes out in the minutest circumstance, in every little detail.  I come up boldly to this truth, that “If God be for us who can be against us?”  There is nothing that can make me say, I do not know whether He be for me or not.  If it be difficulties and trials, I say, Well, it just shows what pains God is taking with me.

John Nelson Darby – God thinks of us

John Nelson Darby (1800-1882)

What a comfort it is to know that God thinks of us, and arranges all for us, though we fail to think of Him! There is not a day, not a moment, but God is thinking of us, and He is above all the plotting of Satan. He will take care of His people. Do they want food? He sends them manna. Guidance? There is the pillar going before them. Do they come to the Jordan? There is the ark there. Have they enemies in the land? There is Joshua to overcome for them. He deals with them in the way of discipline when they need it, as He did with Jacob. He humbled him, but gave him the blessing in the end. What a thought this ought to give us of the love of God, when we thus see His activity in goodness to us all the way through! What comfort to know He is for us, out of the spring and principle of His own love.

J N Darby – in Christ I find my Life, my Strength, and my Object

John Nelson Darby (1800-1882)

There are three things the law could not do.  It could not give life, and, even supposing we got life, it does not give strength; and, another thing of deepest moment for our souls, it does not give us an object.  But in Christ I find my life, my strength, and my object.  “They that are after the Spirit, do mind the things of the Spirit”; they have the true object.  I get in Christ an object that is sufficient to delight God Himself.

J N Darby – Do all things in the Name of the Lord Jesus

This gives us a rule that goes far beyond “what is the harm of this or that?

J N Darby (1800-82)

Everything, whatever ye may do in word or in deed, do all things in the name of the Lord Jesus.  (Colossians 3:17)

This gives us a rule that goes far beyond “what is the harm of this or that?”  and is so simple.  It comes into any common thing in the day, like buying a dress.  Are you doing it in the name of the Lord Jesus?  Can you go to a concert in His name?  Of course not.  The things may not be wrong, but it settles everything – hundreds of questions that might arise.  It gives me as my measure and rule to be walking in Christ, and living for Christ.  I have Christ as my life, and He cannot do it…If  I am in earnest, it is the most comfortable rule possible; but if I am not, it pinches dreadfully:  because you may say, “Am I never to do anything to please myself?”  Ah, you betray yourself!  What a comfort it is to know what He likes!

J N Darby – The Perfectness of the Love of the Saviour

Were we lying in death?  He puts himself into it.  Did we deserve the cup of wrath?  He takes and drinks it.  Was all the power of Satan against us?  He goes into it and breaks i

I find then the perfectness of the love of the Saviour.  His rejection only served as a means of expressing His love still further.  Mark the reality of this expression as meeting all our case.  Were we lying in death?  He puts himself into it.  Did we deserve the cup of wrath?  He takes and drinks it.  Was all the power of Satan against us?  He goes into it and breaks it.  Christ does not say, You come to Me properly, and then I will help you.  No; He comes down into it all; He does not seek to escape;  He does not turn away from the insults and violence of men, but, through them all, He offers Himself without spot to God.

J N Darby – There is no Place so full of Peace as Heaven

There is nothing more important, to meet the turmoil of the world, than getting into this spirit of peace.

There is no place so full of peace as heaven—no jar there; myriads of worshippers all in concord, while there are a thousand harmonies round the centre of God’s glory.  The soul in communion with God will live in the spirit of peace.  There is nothing more important, to meet the turmoil of the world, than getting into this spirit of peace.   When the spirit of peace does not rule in the heart, how can the saints walk as always having peace?  There may be uncompromising faithfulness in such a man, but he cannot walk as Jesus walked.   Nothing keeps the soul in such peace as settled confidence in God.  Without this a man will be continually excited, in haste, and full of anxiety.  If the peace of God keep your hearts, you will have the triumph of it; nothing can be heard that is distinctive from it, that does not perfectly harmonise with it.  Uncompromising firmness becomes us, yet calmness; and nothing can keep the soul so firm as a sense of grace.  This is a sign of power, and moreover, connected with humbleness.  All grace has come to us.  A sense of nothingness, with the spirit of peace, gives a power to surmount things.

J N Darby – Shall I forget the Humiliation of Christ?

Shall I ever forget the humiliation of Christ?

Shall I ever forget the humiliation of Christ? . . . Never! Never! Through all eternity. I shall never forget His humiliation on earth. While seeing Him in glory animates the soul to run after Him, what feeds the soul is the bread come down. That produces a spirit that thinks of everything but itself. . . . Go and study Him, and live by Him, and you will come out in His likeness, in all His grace and gentleness and loveliness. . . . The Lord give us to be so occupied with Him who was so full of love . . . . so full of lowliness, that we shall manifest the same.
